Responsible Gambling

As a key stakeholder in the betting industry, SABA recognises the importance of the private sector partnership with the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF). Our members subscribe to the principal that betting activities should be fun and entertaining but responsible. Protecting the young and the vulnerable underpin this principal.

SABA provides its members with additional services in the supply of posters and pamphlets carrying various responsible gambling slogans and important contact numbers for the SARGF. SABA also serves as a payment gateway for members who voluntarily make contributions to support the SARGF.

This programme is supervised by The South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF) in co-operation with regulatory authorities and the gambling industry. Through the SARGF, free counselling for the prevention and treatment of compulsive and addictive gambling is provided. The SARGF supported by the industry, works tirelessly to improve the understanding of the social impact of gambling.

Gambling Self-exclusion
Self-exclusion is a legislated program where a player may wish to exclude himself/herself from gambling activities. In terms of gambling legislation, anyone can apply for self-exclusion. An individual that is excluded from gambling activities cannot take part in any gambling activity for a period of 6 months. During this period of exclusion, an individual that is excluded is offered counselling and support through the South African responsible Gambling Foundation.

Request for self-exclusion
A request for self- exclusion can be obtained any of the nine provincial gambling boards and or any of the gambling operators on request. The form is prescribed for use in terms of regulation 2 (2) of the National Gambling Regulations. The form is available for download.

Request for self-exclusion upliftment
Requests for upliftment of the self-exclusion order will only be considered once the self-exclusion order has been in force for a period of 6 months and the player proves that he or she has attended counselling sessions with one of the SARGF Treatment Professionals. The Self Exclusion sessions are free to the user to register for the NRGP’s sessions. Contact the NRGP on 0800 006 008 or email Helpline@responsiblegambling.org.za
